Learning Outcomes & Performance Measures

The (US) Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) has been awarded a (US) National Leadership Demonstration Grant by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for the project Assessment in Action: Academic Libraries and Student Success. The grant funding of $249,330 will support ACRL, in partnership with the Association for Institutional Research (AIR) and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU). The funding is for development programmes (in each case a one year programme, over three years, involving teams from a total of 300 libraries). “Librarians who participate in the program, supported by a blended learning environment and a peer-to-peer network, will lead their campus teams in the development and implementation of an action learning project examining the impact of the library on student success and contributing to assessment activities on their campus.”

A new open-access resource from the University of Central Florida — the Blended Learning Toolkit— contains resource for improving both student performance and retention on a broad scale:

3rd Annual E-Learning Summit, Melbourne March 2013. Designed to give Higher Education researchers, online course developers, teaching fellows and academics/lecturers an update on the latest ideas, technologies and strategies for providing online education, the 3rd Annual E-Learning Summit returns on the 6th and 7th March 2013 in Melbourne.

The conference agenda will examine the use of online and information communication technologies to improve student learning and aims to help facilitate pedagogical innovation in online course design and delivery.

Professor Rory McGreal, UNESCO/ Commonwealth of Learning Chair in OER, Athabasca University, Canada, will speak on “Building the Open Educational Resource” and will facilitate an in-depth post-conference workshop on the OER model.

New suite of National Higher Education Surveys announced

Minister for Tertiary Education, Senator Chris Evans, has launched three new National Higher Education Surveys. The survey suite has been designed to cover the student life cycle from commencement to employment. Senator Evans made the announcement while speaking at the Australian Awards for University Teaching National Ceremony on 19 November in Canberra.

The National Higher Education Surveys will improve transparency in the higher education sector and help to improve the quality of teaching and learning in universities. The surveys will be a snapshot of what students value most in universities and are an important part of the ongoing interaction with the student population. From 2013, the suite of surveys will include the University Experience Survey (UES). It will survey current university students about their satisfaction and engagement with their studies.

This will build on the 2012 UES which was administered as a nation wide survey across all universities for the first time this year.  Results from the University Experience Survey will be published on the MyUniversity website subject to consultation with the sector that the UES results are robust and valid.

In addition to the UES, the suite of surveys will include a redesigned Graduate Outcomes Survey.  The current Australian Graduate Survey will continue to be administered until 2014 in the transition to the new centralised suite of surveys. The Australian Government has also undertaken to develop a new survey of employer needs and satisfaction with graduates in line with the recommendations of the Advancing Quality in Higher Education (AQHE) Reference Group report.

The Australian Government will engage an independent organisation to centrally administer the suite of surveys commencing from 2013, ensuring they are implemented equitably and efficiently, reducing the administrative burden on universities and increasing the quality of data produced. Development of the survey suite has been overseen by the Advancing Quality in Higher Education Reference Group, chaired by Professor Ian O’Connor, Vice- Chancellor of Griffith University.

The author, a Canadian education journalist  takes a look at pros and cons of MOOCs by experiencing a 10 week course as a student then looks at the major players: Udacity, Coursera, EDX. A good, succinct, very readable overview, via Justin Menard’s blog on educational technology:

Information Literacy

Project Information Literacy Research Report: “Learning Curve”, by Alison J Head:

Abstract: Qualitative findings about the information-seeking behavior of today’s college graduates as they transition from the campus to the workplace. Included are findings from interviews with 23 US employers and focus groups with 33 recent graduates from four US colleges and universities, conducted as an exploratory study for Project Information Literacy’s (PIL’s) Passage Studies. Most graduates in our focus groups said they found it difficult to solve information problems in the workplace, where unlike college, a sense of urgency pervaded and where personal contacts often reaped more useful results than online searches. Graduates said they leveraged essential information competencies from college for extracting content and also developed adaptive information-seeking strategies for reaching out to trusted colleagues in order to compensate for what they lacked. At the same time, employers said they recruited graduates, in part, for their online searching skills but still expected and needed more traditional research competencies, such as thumbing through bound reports, picking up the telephone, and interpreting research results with team members. They found that their college hires rarely demonstrated these competencies. Overall, our findings suggest there is a distinct difference between today’s graduates who demonstrated how quickly they found answers online and seasoned employers who needed college hires to use a combination of online and traditional methods to conduct comprehensive research.

COLIS2013 Call for Papers: There is an information literacies conference track for the eighth International Conference on Conceptions of Library and Information Science (CoLIS8). COLIS 2013 takes place at the Royal School of Library and Information Science in Copenhagen, Denmark, 19-22 August, 2013. The call is for short or long papers presenting empirical research within information literacies and/or discussjng methodological issues. The deadline for submissions is March 1st 2013. Among the accepted papers on information literacies, one paper will be awarded the inaugural iilresearch Best Information Literacies Paper Award. Textbooks of the Future: will you be buying a product…..or a Service While using the subject of eTexts in the school environment, this report points to some very relevant factors to consider in this space: cost is not the issue any more, the complicated ownership of some digital content, dependence on certain devices to access content, what is being purchased is no longer a “free standing product”, but a “time bounded service”, problem of accessing content once contracts have expired, etc.
